Do I need special software with Windows 7 to get this working, or is it built-in? I've seen these two registry keys mentionedĪ couple of hours later, and it worked this time. I think I'm going to keep the new NIC anyways, and see if I can get a load-balancing setup going on it in concert with the old NIC. Then on a whim, I tried attachingĪnother cable to the old NIC again, and to my surprise, the old NIC was working at full-speed again! In fact, I had both NICs working at gigabit speeds, on two separate ports of the same gigabit switch simultaneously! I have no idea how it got working again,Īny more than I have any idea why it stopped working in the first place. Everything was working normally on the new NIC, like it used to under the old NIC. After I bought the add-in NIC, I moved the cable over to the new NIC from the onboard NIC, of course.

Internally, over my LAN I can use its full gigabit bandwidth. I do use this computer as a home server, behind the router so a lot of media files get shared out over this computer to otherĬomputers on my network, for example. Well, it's not just the ISP's speed that I'm concerned with, which is of course going to be *way* less than the gigabit is capable of. If it's a GB NIC, then it'll run up to 1GB, depending on line quality and the rest of your and your ISP's hardware, no matter if it's a PCI or PCIe card. However, is a PCI NIC fast enough for Gigabit Ethernet, or did I really need a Strange thing is that the PCI NIC I just picked up is the exact same chipset as what was already on my onboard NIC, a Realtek RTL8167. Yup, just did that about half-an-hour ago. Seems they are very fragile for some odd reason. > Maybe it's the area I live, but I am yet to have an onboard NIC last a

They can be had for less than $20 at most > With the luck I've had with onboard NIC's, I would alternately suggest No joy, the NIC refuses to work at anything other than 10 Mbps. Yeah, thanks, eventually did discover where that was, and tried it. Change it to what speed you want, exit, and see if you can > tab there should be a 'Speed & Duplex' setting (or something similarly > adapter, pick Properties, then click on Configure. > choose Change Adapter Settings in the left column. > see if that helps (assuming the router or whatever you're plugged into > You can go into the NIC properties and change it to 1GB/Full duplex and I think it was just throwing a temper tantrum. I only tried it aboutĪ couple of hours later, and it worked this time. I did try the old NIC immediately after installing the new NIC, and it was still in its uncooperative state.

Regarding whether the new NIC somehow made the old NIC work again, I doubt that's the case, it's probably just a coincidence. That link seems to be about load balancing RPC calls over HTTP, so it seems to be a rather specialized scenario of load-balancing. There's no such thing as TMI when asking for tech support. Strange that just adding another NIC would fix it, but hey, they are PC's :-) I know Win7 has "Bridge Connections" listed under Advanced in Network Connections, Those servers had dual HP NIC's with their own software, so that was just about automatic.

I don't know much about it- I haven't done load balancing since WinServer 2003.
